Is this the best head torch for kids? The Fenix HL10

One of the most useful items of kit on any trip with an overnight stay is a really good torch. And one of the best torches we’ve used recently is the Fenix HL10. It’s really comfortable, amazingly small and really well made. And best of all – it has an innovative 2-part design so you get a head torch and hand torch all in one. So we thought we’d review it for you.

First impressions

Just by looking at the packaging, you can tell this is going to be a very good product made from quality materials. Once it’s open, it’s very easy to add the AAA battery that’s included.

The head band

A lot of head torches can be quite bulky and uncomfortable to wear - especially for youngsters. Not so with the HL10. It has an ultralight head band made from a very soft micro fleece material with cushioning on the inside so it doesn’t slip. And it’s fully adjustable with a very easy to use friction type secure lock mechanism.

The torch body

The Fenix HL10 uses a single AAA battery and the body size is just a bit bigger than a AA battery so it’s really compact. The body is made from aircraft grade aluminium which feels tough and durable. No cheap plastic here.

And the base of the body is curved to fit across the forehead which makes it very comfortable to wear. In fact, it’s by far the most comfortable head torch we’ve ever tried. Perfect for smaller heads.

When the body is in the bracket, it can rotate 90 degrees so you can control the angle of the light. If you open the orange cover, you can release the torch body and use it as a hand held torch or key ring torch. Very practical when you’re spending time outdoors and a great feature for kids as they love a gadget. You can also stand the torch on it's end so it can be useful as a task light.

The technical bits

The button at the end of the torch cycles through 3 lighting options:

  • 3 lumens (battery life of 27 hours)
  • 27 lumens (battery life of 2 hours 45 mins)
  • 70 lumens (battery life of 50 mins)

And when you turn the torch back on it remembers the previous brightness setting. A very useful feature that stops you having to always cycle through the settings.

The LED will give a lifespan of 50,000 hours so you only need to worry about replacing the battery. And AAA batteries are cheap and readily available.

It is also IPX-8 waterproof rated to 2 meters so you can even go swimming with it. As long as you don’t dive too deeply.  And with its 1-meter impact resistance rating, it can take a bit of abuse if you drop it.

In Summary

The Fenix HL10 is a really robust and practical torch and we would recommend it to any youngster to take on a camping trip or just to have around the house.

It’s very powerful for it's size, lightweight and easy to use. So if you’re willing to spend a bit more on a head torch that’s built to last -  then the Fenix HL10 is a great buy.
